“All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the LORD had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the LORD” (Ex. 35:29).

A Generous Heart

The book of Exodus provides us with a beautiful picture of generosity. God had told Moses and the people of Israel to build his tabernacle, and the people responded by bringing various gifts as freewill offerings. What’s so cool about this part of the story is that the invitation to give was to “whoever is of a generous heart” (35:5), and to all “whose heart moved them to bring anything” (35:29). What a beautiful picture of generosity from the heart! The New Testament confirms that generous giving must be ruled by the heart. “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7). We’ve got to be honest. We cannot do the work which God has called us to do without the generous support of individuals and churches with a heart to give. If God has moved in your heart, would you respond?
